A Girl Without Complexes

If you do not know who Julia Volkova is, then firstly we need to inform you about other matters. This is a multicolored wonder in which you are reading the current non-canonical text, - a glance-through magazine. The thin, straight-edged box which you can see in many homes is called a television and serves the purpose of finding out truths. If you see lonely, but talkative people on the street, they have not gone insane, they simply have phones. We have, in the XXI century, knowledge of many new things. You have been on stage almost since birth and for sure feel at home there. Due to this, do you feel uncomfortable when you are off stage? For example, in an uncommon and frightening situation when you are not singing in front of an audience, but are just talking with one specific person at a cafe?

Certainly the stage is like a second home for me. I feel great there, I love to socialize with the public, I have many fans. I like to give away my emotions, my worries…I give it to them, they give it to me. But, I can communicate the same way with a person while sitting at a cafe. I occasionally am in the role of a journalist, asking a bunch of questions, because I love to learn about the personal life of a person. I have many friends with whom I like to have tete-a-tetes, drink some wine, play backgammon, chat. 

Excellent. Imagine this type of situation: your fortune was told and in the future your fate will do a complete turnaround. You will stop singing and become a member of the regional assembly of the ascetic patriot party. Will you be happy with the new opportunity or run away to escape the evil eye?

I do not consider this to be the evil eye. We do not know what will happen tomorrow or the day after. Actually, I live in the present and do not make long-term goals for the future. In any case, everything can completely change tomorrow and life can turn 180 degrees. I am ready for change, I am even ready to be a deputy. You have to grow in the most different types of regions, not only artistic ones. If there is an opportunity to become a member of The State Duma, then why not!

What is more attractive to you- gossip about you on the internet, tooth pain, or the bird / swine flu? 

The bird / swine flu, of course. Just because it sounds pretty. Bird! Swine!

What type of a fan does a male have to be in order to get your phone number instead of an autograph? 

Well, this is hard to say. I think that it should go like this: you meet a person, look into their eyes, and there should be a spark that you can feel in order to give your number to this person. I cannot say that these are the specific qualities- you can see someone for five years and for those five years keep learning about them. Spark!

Right now feminist-minded girls consider that it is right to be offended when a woman is seen as a sex object. Does this concern you? Especially if you learn that about 300,000 of our readers will look at you this way when they see the photos. 

Why not? Actually, I think that a woman should contain sex- in her eyes, her gestures, her movements, her behavior. This of course is not a floozy, but there should be an aroma of sex coming from a woman, I suppose. Some sort of internal charisma, emotions. I am totally fine with it, why not. Especially in this type of magazine - XXL - why not be a sex object here!

Imagine a common situation: you are sitting, tied to a chair in an abandoned warehouse, near you is a complexly-built bomb, it has a big screen with a backwards count, Bruise Willis is thinking of which wire to cut. How do you entertain yourself while he is doing this? A mind game of chess? Solving a sudoku puzzle? 

I will seduce Bruise Willis!

You have started new projects many times from scratch and have succeeded. If you were offered to do training in “How to start from scratch so that everything works out”, what would you teach people?

Wow, this is a hard question. Yes, needless to say, I had a long hiatus, four years. Right now I have a new start in my career. Of course none of this is simple because there is a new team and everything is from scratch. I had an operation on my vocal chords and now I am recovering…What would I teach? In terms of new projects, I think that the most important things are a person’s desires, the setting of goals, and moving forward, not paying attention to any type of gossip, talk, or envy. Just open the door, dont pay attention to anything else. 

Excellent. What if you were offered to play yourself in a movie about yourself? What type of traits would you show off so that the image of Julia Volkova turned out compelling?

I don’t think I need to show off attention. It’s hard to talk about myself, but my persona, how I am and how I live- it’s equal to how I really am and live. It’s obvious, it’s the truth, not being intimidated by anything. There are no complexes, no fixations- it is just how I am.

Then tell me, why do you think bubbles, which are derived from the Golgi apparatus, don’t mix with the membrane vacuole, but enter the vacuole as a result of encapsulations of their Polylayer?

“t.A.T.u. were so popular because they gave people freedom”

Former singer of t.A.T.u. Yulia Volkova talks about the banning of the film Anatomy of t.A.T.u. on channel Culture

The directors of channel Culture removed the documentary about t.A.T.u., who were popular in the early 2000’s, from being show. The director, Vitaliy Manskiy, announced that the banning of the film surprised him. The channel was the initiator of the demonstration and discussion of the film in the show called “Watch. Discuss”. In an announcement from the administration of the channel, the reason for this decision was due to the law about protecting children from harmful information. The singers exploited the lesbian image and in the film the producer of t.A.T.u., Ivan Shapovalov, smokes a cigarette, presumably containing marijuana. 

The showing of the film was scheduled for September 4th (the law about protecting children from harmful information and pornography goes into effect September 1st). 

Anatomy of t.A.T.u. was shot in 2003 and was repeatedly shown on Russian television in 2012, as Vitaliy Manskiy has said.

Yulia Volkova was asked to comment on the ban of the film as well as other prohibitions the band had to deal with.

How often did t.A.T.u. come in contact with prohibitions?
There are a bunch of stories about us not being able to hug, kiss, or even hold hands, as it was in Abu Dhabi. I don’t know, back then I thought that we could do everything that we wanted, that is why similar prohibitions irritated me. I was little. Now I understand that in every country there are laws which need to be complied with. But this story has nothing to do with that. 

What is in the film that could have caused a blow against morality? What is your reaction to the ban?
I don’t think the film contains that many shocking things that aren’t in a regular program of Andrei Malahov. But I can say that this ban is worrying me deeply. Let’s be honest: everything is now online, television is losing its ground more and more. 

Still, there is concern: will we turn into China in the sense that artists will have to perform in modest, covered up attire, without any sort of dancing and “ignition”? I do not think you can prohibit anything. People should have freedom of self-expression. When we were in t.A.T.u., we were so popular due to the fact that we gave people that freedom, we received hundreds of letters in which we were thanked particularly for that. 

From your point of view (in your genre or in art in general), what do you think deserves to be banned and could be completely prohibited in the arts? 
If they want to ban our film that’s set for 11PM due to kids who are not sleeping, then they should clean up everything on TV. They should not show, for example, Elton John’s concerts or Queen’s, because Freddie died from speed and Elton John married a man. Don’t ever mention Rudolph Nureyev. The channel Culture should refuse it. What can we even say about Tchaikovsky. And never show any films starting from Some Like It Hot to Last Tango in Paris. And since this spree is going around, other channels should be prohibited from showing all kinds of criminal news, and this, in my opinion, is much worse- when you are being shown every day who died where and why. 

Sergei Kurehin said, “The main rule in art is absence of any rules”. Do you agree with this?
I think there should be all types of rules. Musicians should produce quality work, the same goes for actors.  We should be responsible for our audience, avoiding hypocrisy in our work. But prohibiting people on the grounds of their sexual orientation, that is strange. Really, I think that the problem here is not in the film. 

If you were to put kids in a glass bubble where they would sit in happy ignorance, then when they finally do find out about things like sex, same-sex love, then this could be a big shock for them. And if the government is afraid for our children then there should be a physchologist in every school who will work with children and parents, teaching one about interaction and communicate such things to them, and others about normally and adequately accepting any deviations from the traditional picture of the world.

-She is still working on the book, it will be autobiographical and will include many things people don’t know

-In the book she will speak about the personal relationship her and Ivan shared during t.A.T.u.

-She was asked about a possibility of doing a duet with Lena, to which she responded, “We were in a duet for 10 years. Let us live separately.”

-She is doing a shoot for Caravan Story magazine with her kids for the fall

-She is willing to discuss performing with Lena at the 2014 Olympics and would rather talk directly with Lena about it

-Her website is being updated and there is a new photo-shoot going on for it and it will have a whole new concept

-She doesn’t know anything about the release of Galoyan’s “Night of Your Life” 

-In regards to a question asking if she will release acapellas of her songs: “You guys, these questions…I don’t think about these things.”

-She is thinking about hiring dancers 

-It’s been a long time since she has had sex with a girl

-She does not have any t.A.T.u. songs in her phone

-She has plans to do a shoot for Maxim magazine

-She has no plans for any more duets

-In regards to doing songs with a similar vocal style as t.A.T.u. (screaming, higher notes, etc.), she said maybe, but does not think it’s necessary to repeat the past and to make songs sound like t.A.T.u.’s

-Yulia never wishes for anything, but if she had 3 wishes she’d want the people close to her to be healthy, happy, smiling, and to make goals for themselves and achieve them

-She normally does not cook, but if she’s in the kitchen she makes sweets

-The dialogue in 30 Minutes/Polchasa consists of Yulia and Lena laughing and  reminiscing about hanging out with friends and how they celebrated New Year’s with them

-The format of the Muz-TV awards this year was artists doing covers of other artists’ songs, so they chose to cover Goloya 

-She chose not to comment about something regarding Ivan and how he acted towards her, the audio was too poor to understand what the she was being asked

-She thinks that Lena and her need more time apart 

-She is going to perform with Dima at the Golden Gramophone Awards around December, it will involve some sort of tricks/stunts 

-She is not sure about Stand Up/Woman All The Way Down/Rage being on the future album, those were experimental tracks with a rock sound. She performs them, except Stand Up because that track is not finished, it was just a demo. 

-She wants to perform everywhere she can, soon she will perform in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Turkey, and in the fall there will be a Latin American promo tour since her song made it on MTV there

-She is no longer with Gala Records because they are capable of very little

-The idea for the video for Didn’t Wanna Do It was Yulia’s and Lena Kiper helped

-She is not practicing her English

-She has a ballad song recorded 

-The soundtrack for her movie is not recorded and she does not know anything about what is going on with it, she believes the release of the movie will be delayed

-She wants to do a show on Ru-TV, but it is still in discussion so she doesn’t want to promise anything 

-Lubov-Suka will be on her future album

-She isn’t sure if All Because of You will be on her future album, she considers the frist single to be Didn’t Wanna Do It

-She plans both a Russian and English album

Another attempt to build a relationship with a man has failed for the member of the most scandalous Russian lesbian duet. 

In the winter Yulia planned to get married to her civil spouse Vadim, and a month ago everyone was actively discussing her candid kisses with Dima Bilan at the Muz-TV award ceremony. But today we can see Volkova at all the social events in the company of a beautiful blonde.

Volkova’s tender affection towards the same sex is no secret to anyone. Even from the time of t.A.T.u. it was clear that the relationship between the two singers was not just a creative one. 

And so after the marriage to businessman Parviz Yasinov and a couple more relationships that did not work out, the 27 year old rebel returned to her roots. The girls had a real romantic vacation on the snow-white beach of Cuba.

“Yulia did not ask me to go to Cuba”, says Dima Bilan. “To tell you the truth, I did not even know she flew there. Yulia is a free person and she can do anything. We really had a pleasant connection, she has great kids, but I want to say once again that now she is free…”

Disregarding Bilan’s assurance, Volkova can hardly be called free. Yulia spent the whole time in Cuba with her new lover.

During the day they preferred to bask on the beach, at night they were content with each other’s company in a luxurious bungalow. If Russia allowed same-sex marriage, Yulia’s and Sasha’s vacation would have looked like a honeymoon. 

Volkova’s passion is named Sasha and she is building a career for herself in Hollywood. The girls met in L.A. where Alexandra had lived the last few years. And after a few days, the attachment of the beauties became so strong that not only did Volkova buy a ticket to Moscow, but so did her new mistress.

“I never hid that I like boys as well as girls”, says scandalous Yulia. “Sasha inspires me. She is a good girl and it’s awesome being with her. Life will show where the road will lead.”

It will soon be known whether this close friendship will grow into a serious relationship or if Yulia will return to the stage with a new, this time blonde, member of t.A.T.u..After all, you do not want to make important decisions on snow-white beaches and terraces of elite cafes.
